Digg.com offline from DMCA?

I was just watching an insanely popular Digg thread that supposedly contained the key to the HD-DVD encryption scheme. It went straight to the top 10 by the time I finally quit watching, about 30 minutes.

I just checked back in to see what it’s doing now, and Digg is completely offline. Not even a 404… Traceroute is dying along the way as well.

I’m guessing this has something to do with the DMCA. If that’s the case, it’s pretty scary to think someone could pull the plug on Digg like that. Should be interesting to find out!

UPDATE: by the time I published this, it’s back up. Maybe it was just a random event or heavy traffic, who knows. Anyway, here’s a link to the Digg thread.

The Duhks

Awesome, this is already on YouTube!

One of the highlights from Merlefest 07… John Paul Jones onstage with The Duhks. If you pause this at :39, you can see my burnt, receding hairline in the lower left corner:

the HD market is broken

Samsung and their new 1080p wireless HDTV:

Samsung is shooting for 1080p on their monstrous TVs. But the movie studios are worried that the wireless transmission methods used for the displays—which uses 802.11n—may not be tight enough to keep people from hijacking (that is, recording) the HD content stripped of its DRM. Once again, innovation and appealing features are being threatened by copyright concerns.

In order to meet Samsung’s target date for a September launch, the movie studios need to approve Samsung’s secure wireless system by late spring. “We have the technology; we are just waiting on approval and are currently negotiating for approval for June,” the spokesperson told us.

Really, that’s messed up. Samsung shouldn’t have to answer to the MPAA or Hollywood. The FCC, maybe. But not Hollywood.

Feisty MacBook

I installed Ubuntu Feisty Fawn dual boot on my MacBook last week. It worked pretty well — Wifi, audio & native 1280×800 worked right out of the box, and it was very easy to add external support for Touchpad features. Not a bad start.

The one trouble spot was when I wanted to go to an external monitor at 1680×1050 — no dice…. I’m not sure there’s support for 1680×1050 with the i810 device. I can get 1280×1024, but that’s not good enough to get me away from OS X for long.

Overall, I like where Feisty is. And I can do 1280×800, so without the external monitor, I can boot into Ubuntu and should be just fine. But to take over my desktop, I really need to get to big LCD resolutions.

So if anyone has any hints on 1680×1050 with Fiesty Fawn on a MacBook, let me know!

Social Catastrophe

ABC News has a great interview with a psychiatrist who says showing the VA Tech shooter’s video is a “social catastrophe”. Some of the most reasonable quotes I’ve heard in a long time.

He basically says America is going to see this guy plastered all over the TV as this menacing figure, but

He’s a weak link. He needs to create and produce his own picture in order to give himself a sense of power. Nobody saw him that way.

If you can take [talk show host Don] Imus off the air, you can certainly keep [Cho] from having his own morning show.”

Take that, Matt Lauer.
