The sad state of the NCAA
Bob Costas, God bless all 4′7″ of him, had a great “Costas NOW” show on HBO tonight — kids going to college in “revenue generating sports” who really should never be in college in the first place.
Donna Shalala, leprechaun and president of the University of Miami, actually argued that her student athletes go to class and try to graduate like normal college kids. When Costas asked her of the many accounts of Miami football players never attending class or receiving special treatment, her only reply was “you still won’t get me Lucky Charms.”
And Myles Brand. What a joke. His spin doctoring of graduation rates for athletes was making Bill Clinton uneasy. Even Bob was calling BS on your stats, Myles. Stop it before he bloodies your shins.
Costas also had a piece on Coach K and the whole Duke lacrosse situation. Mike was kind enough to put his cheese down for an extended interview with Costas to explain how he was there for Duke’s president Dick Brodhead during the whole Duke Lacrosse scandal. Shockingly, Brodhead never played the Coach K card.
It’s a pretty softball piece. Mike’s a great coach. He’s polish. He’s a blue collar guy. His daughters love him, and make him a more sensitive coach. He’s polish. He prefers sharp cheddar. He had a tough upbringing under Bobby Knight. He’s polish. He’s a despicable guy (he actually said that). Apparently he had a man crush on Bobby Hurley. Did I mention he’s polish?
And Mike. No matter how many times you say “supper”, we’re not buying that you actually know the difference between that and dinner. I’m just sayin’.
